Tips to design an SEO friendly website

Search Engine Optimization is not a gimmick a few websites employ anymore, it is something that every website that takes itself seriously must employ if not for anything else, to survive. How does survival come into it? Well, think about it, there are more than six million websites in the world. And if you create a website, no matter how great, how informative and attractive, it will still be just one of those six million. The chances that you will reach the full potential of your client base are almost negligible.

This is when search engines come in. Google, Bing, Yahoo and a few others have dominated the search engine market. Think of how you browse the internet yourself. When you’re looking for information, all you do is search online and wait for the search engine to return results to you. The fraction of second it takes Google is definitely worth more than the endless trawling you’d have to do looking for sites. If you want your site to show up on search engines, there are a few things that you just have to do.

1. Keyword:

Keywords are those words that describe what you do in a few phrases or in a few well chosen words. With the best keywords, you can turn internet traffic to your site easily, and that is half the job done. What you need to do is first choose your keywords wisely. Ensure they really are something to do with your business, and words which potential searchers are likely to know and search for. Then place your keywords correctly in your footers and headers, your titles and Met tags, in texts and content, as well as the URLs. Don’t overdo this because although you want to be efficient you don’t want to be banned from search sites for spamming.

2. Understand how search engines work:

Most search engines do not use JavaScript, so if you want your site to show up, it is best that you do not use it as well, and make it easier for the engines to find you. Instead create a web architecture that makes it easier for search sites to find you. Ensure that the links you use are not images but are text based.

3. Use social media:

Social media networks are terribly underrated for SEOs but the fact is no matter what you do, you still need to generate a buzz and create a tribe (in the words of Seth Godin) for your product and service. People should be talking about it, commenting about, creating links to it, and not only does this help make your site popular, it also shows credibility, that real people are using it and have an opinion about it. Use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn for all they’re worth. They’re free!

4. Avoid pop ups and Flash ads:

Pop ups can be very irritating and the last thing you want is for visitors to be irritated with your site. Apart from that, pop ups on sites generally do not make it high on the search engines. The same goes for Flash content. While it may seem attractive, Flash ads are not easily readable by search sites, so at least while you are starting; these are some things that you need to avoid.
